Mastering Your Not Winter, Not Yet Spring Style
There’s something about the shift in season that feels like a spark of inspiration. The light lingers a little longer. The air softens. And suddenly, getting dressed feels less like a chore and more like possibility. I think for me, by this time I am over my winter clothes and am excited to lighten things up a bit with my spring wardrobe. For many, winter feels so functional, often asking the question will I be warm enough in this? While spring feels like we're bringing the fashion back and bridging fashion and function. However, this in-between moment — not quite winter, not fully spring — can also be tricky when it comes to getting dressed.
Transitional dressing is less about replacing your wardrobe and more about reimagining it. How can you adjust your favorite winter looks to make them relevant for spring? Transitional dressing can feel like an art, and in a way, it is. Here are a few tips to master your transitional style and to get dressed with confidence and clarity, not confusion.
1. Before reaching for new arrivals, revisit your winter staples. A structured wool blazer becomes your outerwear this spring layered over a lightweight knit or silk blouse. It acts not only as your outerwear, but also your outfit completer. Bonus, you don't need to take it off when you get inside.
2. Swap your boots for flats or a sneaker. Your favorite winter looks feel lighter when paired with a sleek loafer instead of a boot. If you live in a climate where boots are still relevant in spring, opt for a light neutral to give the overall feel of a lighter, airier look. By swapping chocolate brown for a nude or ivory shoe, the overall look feels lighter for spring.
3. Swap your blue or black denim for a cream or white pair. Choosing an overall lighter color scheme, even if you're still wearing your cashmere, can help you feel more 'Spring' and fuel your excitement for the warmer weather. Yes, you can wear white pants before Labor Day.
4. Trade your stockings for self tanner (if needed LOL). For months we've been wearing stockings with our skirts and dresses. With the onset of Spring, go bare legged even if you're still in boots.
5. Most importantly, use this season as a moment to assess. What did you reach for repeatedly this winter? What felt aligned with the woman you are now and where did you feel a gap? Spring shopping should be strategic, not reactive. It’s an opportunity to refine your wardrobe so it supports where you're headed, not just where you’ve been.
