The Summer Shorts Guide is Here!
Shorts are a summer staple as temperatures soar, but are also often a controversial item in many women's closets. Often women have a love hate relationship with shorts, largely because shorts can be a tricky fit.
This guide is designed to help you find the perfect short this summer, or find you the best alternative to shorts. Because the goal isn’t to force one version of summer dressing—it’s to help you find the silhouette that works best for your body, comfort level, and lifestyle.
As you shop, start with fit first. The best shorts should skim the body rather than cling, with a little ease through the hip and thigh. If fabric is pulling across the front, pocket lines are flaring, or the leg opening is cutting into the thigh, it’s a sign to size up or try a different shape. To be honest, I size up in shorts often. It's not about the number on the tag, it's about how they feel on your body.
Current short silhouettes flare out from the leg, mimicking an 'A' shape versus straighter styles that hug the thigh as seen in previous seasons. When trying on shorts, it's important to walk around in them and sit down to ensure they are comfortable for daily life.
Length is the next thing to pay attention to: short and mid-length styles are great for casual days, while a Bermuda offers more coverage and often feels more polished for casual work settings. If you love the Bermuda trend but are nervous to try, pair it with a small heel for the best fit. I personally prefer them with a small heel as they feel less masculine. When choosing the right length for your body, opt for a pair that hits as the thigh begins to narrow and taper in.
Fabric will often determine whether a short feels dressy or casual. Linen, cotton poplin and denim lean casual, while twill and tailored styles lean more polished.
If you never quite feel like yourself in shorts, don’t force it—the right lightweight pant or easy skirt can give you the same versatility with a bit more confidence. In general, the most versatile shorts are the ones that feel comfortable to sit, walk, and move in—and style just as easily with a tank and sandal as they do with a button-down or lightweight knit.
