What suits you best?

What suits you best?

This week marked Met Gala Monday! Each year the Met Gala features a different theme and this year it was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", which explored the history and influence of Black dandyism and the ways fashion has been used as a tool of both enslavement and liberation. The dress code was "Tailored for You," inviting guests to interpret menswear and tailoring with their own unique style.

he night was filled with expressive looks, all perfectly tailored. This week's gala got me thinking of my favorite summer tailored look, the shorts suit. I love a shorts suit for its playful sophistication, its balance of structure and tailoring with a summer staple and its unexpected alternative to a dress. A short suit can be professional for casual work events, sexy for a GNO, or polished but casual for a Spring day out.

Here are a few tips for wearing a shorts suit this season:

  • Consider proportion. The blazer of your suit should be more relaxed and longer. A cropped jacket plus a short short is going to come off trashy and just shows too much skin.

  • Inseam matters. If you're trying to wear a short suit to a work event or to the office (dress code permitting!) opt for a longer, bermuda style short. Bermuda shorts are trending this season and the key to pulling them off is all in the fit and styling. They shouldn't be tight to your leg as knee length shorts were from seasons ago, but more relaxed like a trouser. I like to style them with a feminine shoe to balance the masculine feel of the short. I love when a blazer and the shorts are the same length for a night out. It has a sexy yet conservative feel. The length of the blazer and sleeve coverage helps to balance the amount of leg shown.

  • A leather short is a great option for transitional seasons like Spring and Fall.

  • Consider a tailor if the shorts are not the perfect length for you. Shorts typically have an additional inch inside to let out, or if something is shown in a bermuda style but you prefer a shorter length, that is a simple tweak for a tailor!

This week I've rounded up my favorite shorts suits and suit separates looks for various different occasions! Shop them here.
