Shop the Sale, Not the Hype
Memorial Day sales are the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe—but let’s be real: a deep discount doesn’t always mean a smart buy. As a busy woman of influence, your style is more defined, your closet more curated, and your time too valuable for impulse purchases that end up collecting dust. Before you click “add to cart,” take a moment to read through my top tips to navigate a seasonal sale.
Before you give your credit card a workout, implement these few tips to ensure you're shopping with intention and not being influenced.
1. Assess what you actually need. For many women, this can feel like a daunting task. Often I hear from my clients, 'I don't even know what I need.' Instead, take a look at your next few months. Does it include lots of time at the beach with family? Long weekends on the sidelines cheering the kiddos on? Whatever it is, analyze your lifestyle to make sure the pieces you bring in support what you actually are doing. It's fun to buy the breezy dress, but does it make sense for your lifestyle? There is truly no better feeling when you know you have the clothes that support your activity AND make you feel good.
2. Make a list of items that support your lifestyle. For example, if you know you need shorts, you can then filter your shopping finds by shorts to ensure you aren't being tempted by other, less relevant items. Build a short wishlist rooted in lifestyle, not hype.
3. Take inventory of what needs replacing. Are your sandals from last year worn out? Has your weight fluctuated and garments not fitting right? Use this time to update your pieces! Hot items that I'm buying for Summer are minimalist leather sandals, linen everything and clean denim shorts without distressing. These are great items to pick up in a sale!
4. Update your basics. A wardrobe is truly built on the basics. I know it's more fun to buy the printed blouse or embellished dress, but how many times can you actually wear them? A quality tee, cotton sweater or linen set will provide your wardrobe with so much versatility this season. Stocking up on those items at a discount is just smart. Items that you can wear year round like sneakers and denim are a great idea too!
5. Be an opportunist. Have you had your heart set on something but can't take the leap due to price? A sale is a great time to purchase something you may not have previously been comfortable investing in.
6. Avoid the rush of a markdown frenzy by using the “pause and plan” method. Walk away from your online cart for 30 minutes, or sleep on it if you’re unsure. If you’re still thinking about it the next day—and it aligns with your wardrobe goals—it’s likely worth the buy. Remember: a deal is only great if it works for your body, your life, and your personal style.
7. Be an outfit repeater, not a one hit wonder. I'm so over the idea of wearing a garment once and never again. This tells me you didn't love it that much to begin with, because if you did, you'd want to wear it again. Ask yourself where you can see yourself wearing a garment. Does that occasion pop up regularly for you? If so, it could be a great purchase! If your answer is an event that rarely occurs, the garment is just going to collect dust. Your wardrobe is meant to be WORN.
8. Don't skip accessories! So often I hear, 'I just need more tops' and maybe you do... but I PROMISE you, accessories like a necklace, earring or belt will transform your look. This week a client tried on a top and shorts I purchased for her and loved them. She was ready to move on to the next when I said, 'Wait, lets put this necklace on first.' If you could have only heard her gasp! Telling yourself you're not into jewelry is such a limiting belief and closes you off from accessorizing.
9. Finally, don’t be swayed by the pressure to overhaul your closet for the season. Instead, focus on building a wardrobe that evolves with you. Prioritize quality over quantity, and invest in pieces that offer versatility—think breathable fabrics, timeless silhouettes, and neutral tones that can be styled a dozen ways. This season, shop like the woman you are: intentional, empowered, and stylish on your own terms.
This week, I've pulled together looks and finds from some of my favorite retailers at various price points!
