The Finishing Touch: 10 Tips to Nail your Accessories
It's no surprise that I've dedicated a whole shopping guide to accessories. If you've been following me for any length of time, you know that I am obsessed with accessories. They are my favorite things to shop for, especially when on vacation. I preach all the time to my clients how the swap of an accessory can change the whole vibe of a look and this week I've given you visual proof- 8 looks styled 2-3 different ways for different functions, just by swapping out your accessories.
It's proof that you don't always need something new to wear, you just need to switch up the styling. In addition to this week's shopping guide, I've compiled a list of 10 tips to help you when accessorizing. Because the truth is, you cannot look put together without accessories. It is just not possible.
Here are 10 of my favorite go-to guidelines for getting it right, every time.
1. Let one piece lead. Statement necklace? Keep your earrings simple — a hoop or stud does the trick. Going bold with your earrings instead? Skip the necklace, or keep it delicate. One statement piece per look is plenty.
2. Match your shapes, not just your metals. When you're stacking bracelets, layering necklaces, or pairing earrings with a necklace, look for harmony in shape — all round, or all angular. It's a small detail that makes a big difference.
3. Use color on purpose. Accessories are one of the easiest ways to pull a look together. Echo a color already in your outfit, or use a pop of color to create a focal point. Either way, it's an easy win.
4. Let your neckline decide.
V-neck → a pendant necklace is your best friend
Crew neck → try a round necklace or layered pieces
Embellished neckline or one-shoulder top → skip the necklace altogether — let the neckline shine on its own
5. Know your focal point. Already have a standout piece in your outfit? Keep your accessories minimal — just enough to add polish. Wearing your reliable closet staples instead? That's your moment to bring in a statement piece for personality.
6. Mixed metals are more than okay. In fact, adding a two-tone piece into the mix is a quick way to make mixed metals look intentional and polished.
7. Don't underestimate a hat. A structured hat might be the boldest accessory you own — wear it like you mean it.
8. Decide where you want the eye to go. Want attention on your face? Add statement jewelry. Prefer the eye to travel to your bottom half? Let a statement bag or shoe do the talking.
9. You don't need a perfect match. Your bag, belt, and shoes don't all have to match — but matching at least two of the three brings effortless cohesion to your look.
10. Never skip accessories. Not a jewelry person? No problem — hats, belts, scarves, and handbags all count. Accessories are what make a look feel finished. Don't overthink it: 1-2 well-chosen pieces go a long way.
